I know this sounds like a complex, metaphysical question that has little to do with real life. Nothing could be further from the truth on all accounts. Like everything in life we try to spin complexity out of what is so fundamentally simple.
God is love. 1 John 4:16
There you have it—God is love. Not the conditional, selfish love that waits to express love until we are loved. God is unconditional love that is poured into each of us without any promise of love in return. God’s love is ever-forgiving, which is a good thing given how we behave. God’s love is manifest in the sacrifice of his only Son for us and our lack of love, which is called “sin.”
So, keep God simple. He is love and he pours himself into each of us in perfectly equal doses. However, we will never feel that love until we let it pour out of us to others. That’s because love is like electricity—it needs to flow to be felt. Love is defined by flow. And God is love.
