I pray you don’t even have to think about the answer to that question. God commands us to LOVE. It’s a simple word that communicates a very simple concept. It’s not about mushy, heart-throbbing attraction. It’s about looking into the eyes of each person you encounter and seeing a complete equal created by God.
If you don’t really know what love is about, read Corinthians 13. It’s read at so many weddings but Paul wrote it intending it for everyday use. It’s our checklist for figuring out if we are really following God’s command to LOVE.
God created each one of us equally and loves each one of us unconditionally. He simply expects us to do the same. But we wallow in anything but love. What we “love” is mean-spiritedness and controversy, if the gauge is the popularity of reality TV. Imagine what God thinks about our “survivor” mentality?
I have found that a Real Secret to Life is LOVE, if for no other reason that God commands it. However, the reason goes way beyond simply following a command. If you really start living in love, and trying to really LOVE others, you will start to feel God’s love for you. God pours his love into us but, like electricity, we can’t feel it unless we let God’s love flow through us.
I know this may sound pie-in-the-sky. Trust me—there are times when I am as far away from “love” with certain people I know or randomly encounter, like on the highways. I’m not some smiling angel throwing rose pedals left and right. But I try each day—some more successful than others—to LOVE as best as I can. When I do the world becomes a brighter, clearer place, no matter what life throws at me.
