I think the very clear answer is no. When Peter pulled out his sword to defend Jesus, Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52). Jesus’ command to us to love (John 15:12) is inconsistent with packing a gun meant to harm or kill another child of God.
Before you jump to conclusions, I am a Connecticut independent. The 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution is pretty clear about the right to bear arms, as is the Supreme Court’s interpretation of it. But I first describe myself as a Christian—however flawed and sinful I am—and, as such, follow (try to follow, at least) in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. HIs footsteps are a walk in love.
Jesus sacrificed his life for the love of us. Why can’t we put down the guns and worry more about the needs of others, rather than defending ourselves against others. After all, that is exactly what Jesus taught us to do and actually did. That doesn’t involve packing a gun.
