I am shocked and disgusted by Ray Rice, a powerful NFL football player, slugging his then finance and knocking her cold. Domestic violence is a real cancer that needs to be stopped. But violence of any type also needs to be stopped. In case anyone forgets, “God is love.” (1 John 4:16) That doesn’t mean selective “love.” It means 100% pure love at its core. God is not only love but is defined as love. So, violence of any type, domestic or other, is against the very nature of God.
Unfortunately, we live in a world that is becoming more violent. And each one of us has a hand in fostering violence. Increasingly, TV, the movies, and video games are becoming more real in their violence. We are guilty of promoting violence. What do you think God thinks about all the violence he sees? I’m sure the devil is basking behind the scenes in all the violence in our world.
As Jesus said, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52) And don’t take the word “sword” literally. Fists, tongues, guns, etc. are all swords used to promote violence.
Yes, I’m appalled and disgusted by the Ray Rice show of violence. But let’s not have a media circus about one show of violence overlook all the violence growing in the world. I’m no holy roller or killjoy but we need to look at ourselves—me included!—and get any type of violence out of our lives.
“God is love.” It’s a great yardstick to measure how you are living your life. That’s why LOVE is one of the key Secrets to Life. It’s the one thing that God commands us to do.
