If you don’t think prayer works, think again. Or take the time to really close off the world and pray. If you really try, by taking the time to open up your heart as well as your mind, you will find that prayer works. There are some things that prayer is and isn’t. You need to know those before you try, or simply dismiss prayer as not working.
Prayer is simple conversation with God. Note the word “conversation.” It is not one-way talking, pleading, or shouting to God. It is two-way conversation. That means talking, as well as listening. Prayer is a dialogue. You can certainly do it in a group but the best prayer is that two-way quiet conversation you personally have with God. There was a reason why Jesus went off alone all the time to pray.
Prayer isn’t like rubbing a magic lamp to get three wishes. It is not about getting everything you want. God knows both what you want and, most importantly, what you need. Prayer isn’t just about asking when in need. It is about saying “thanks” every day.
If God knows what I need, why do I have to ask for what I think I need? I pray all the time but don’t get what I want? I don’t hear God? I don’t even know what he sounds like! I don’t have time to pray—my day is too busy!
The drumbeat goes on about the excuses about prayer. Yes, God knows exactly what is in every thought in your head. He also knows exactly what you need. So, why pray? Because if you’re totally honest in prayer—with God and yourself—you start understanding your true self better, just like God knows you. If you think of prayer as a true conversation with a God who knows everything, you begin to be more aware of yourself. In this world we are not in touch with ourselves. That’s a big problem.
People who you pray for die. Does that mean prayer doesn’t work? No. Things happen for a reason, some in our control and others not. That’s the journey of life. But if you pray every day, and even stop during the day to pray, everything about the world and you, and your place in it, will become clearer. You just have to take the time, and open up your heart and mind to God.
You can’t say prayer doesn’t work if you don’t try. Or you can simply slough it off as not working because you don’t want to believe it works. You may be afraid of what you will find out about yourself if you pray. Prayer has real power!
