After more years than I can recall playing golf, I finally found a secret to the game. Hold the club lightly, as lightly as you possibly can. The problem with golf is that we hold the club as tightly as possible, practically choking it to death. The result is it creates tension in our entire bodies, making it very difficult to really swing through the golf ball. So, what’s a golf lesson has to do with life?
We hold onto things in life as tightly as most hold a golf club. We accumulate things in our lives and hold them so tightly we tense and choke ourselves in the process. The “things” are not just money and other material junk. The “things” we hold so tightly include our emotions, especially hurt feelings and anger. We hold onto things so tightly that in the extreme we simply can’t make it through life, we are so tense. On an everyday basis our grip on things bogs us down from realizing our full potential by living life to the fullest.
If you play golf, try holding the club so lightly that you feel like it will fly out of your hands. It won’t. Since we all play at life, try letting your grip go from the “things” in your life. That includes the material things and the emotional things. Loosen your grip. You won’t lose hold of anything in your life. Just the opposite. You will swing through at life like never before.
Golf or life—you won’t know if loosening your grip works or not until you try it. God created us to enjoy and loosen our grips—even on physical lives that will one day end. Jesus was a great role model of someone who kept his grip loose on everything in life.
I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10
Loosen up and enjoy life today. Let go and relax.
