As Jesus Welcomes the Children of Sandy Hook…

The 20 little children and 6 adults who were killed in Newtown (Sandy Hook) Connecticut are in a much safer, caring place. Jesus has welcomed them and they are now under his watchful eye. Unfortunately, the parents and loved ones left behind—as well as the entire Newtown community—are devastated and grieving.

In almost the blink of the eye, a troubled youth shot his way into a school and gunned down 26 people. With semi-automatic guns that fire 5 shots a second, the speed at which this happened was a little more than a blink. And in that blink lives of hope and wonder were sniffed out.

Why we insist on owning automatic and semiautomatic weapons designed for only one thing—killing each other—is beyond comprehension. Jesus can only be shaking his head and remembering when he told Peter, “”Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52)

Prayers for all those in my neighboring town who are grieving at a time that should be filled with joy. And prayers for all those who feel the need to have weapons designed for one purpose—killing hope and wonder.

  1. Semiautomatic guns fire one shot per trigger pull. I think you’ve mistaken automatic (machine guns) with semiautomatic. But quite a sweet devotion. Thanks.
