Who do you live for—you, others, or God? Do you live each day trying to please yourself, others, or God? The first two are a losing battle. The only way to live life is by living to please God. In doing so, you may not please everyone but you will sure please yourself and at least some others in the process. You will find greater happiness, fulfillment, and peace in your life. Sound too simple? That’s because it is!
Living for others is a lost cause. You may end up pleasing some people but you won’t end up pleasing everyone. Trying to please others is like the little Dutch boy in front of the dyke springing holes every minute. You run out of fingers trying to plug the holes. Living your life to please others only leads to a life of frustration.
Living life to please yourself is a dead end. You may please yourself today but you won’t tomorrow. What works one day does not the next. Part of the problem with our world today is that there are too many people trying to please themselves. They look for answers but in all the wrong places. Pleasure is fleeting.
There is only one way to live life—that’s living to please God. Fortunately, God makes it unbelievably easy for us to please him. Simply love one another. That’s because God, who is defined as love, commands us to love. Think about others before yourself and you are pleasing God. And in the process you will be pleasing yourself and others who care. I know—sounds way too simple. However, as I write all the time, God means life to be so very, very (yes, VERY!) simple. We are the ones who complicate it.
Living to please yourself or others not working so well? Give living to please God a try. As Jesus tells us, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28)
Lighten your load. Live as Jesus taught us. Live to please God. LOVE! It’s that easy.
