God is calling you. Listen for the call and answer it. It will lead to a new life.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

It took me fifty years to realize that God is calling me. In fact, it took me that long to realize that God had been calling me throughout my entire life. I simply did not hear the call because I was not paying attention.

I was too busy. I was too absorbed in myself and the world around me. I complicated life way too much.

I look back and now realize that this world of ours was simply too important to me. In reality, and as hard as it is to admit this, God was not that important—in spite of all the motions I went though going to church. I was too caught up in what I could see, touch, and hear. I was too absorbed in this world and with myself—and not with God who was calling me.

Most think about God “calling” as a call from this life to the next. We read obituaries that say, “John was called by God to his final resting place.” This is the final call that we inevitably all receive. However, God is calling us throughout our lives not to die but to live. He calls us to live a new life—a new life of believing in him, trusting in him, loving him, and loving each other as he loves each one of us. He calls each of us to fulfill our own unique purpose in life. Yes, God has a purpose for you—a specific, meaningful purpose in this world that is uniquely yours.

Let each of you lead the life that the Lord has assigned, to which God called you. 1 Corinthians 7:17

God’s call is one to a life of lasting happiness.

I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

God is always there calling to us. He never gives up or goes away. He never tires. All we have to do is answer God’s call. This is a very simple concept but like most things in life we complicate, obscure, or outright deny it.

I have a news flash for you if you do not already get the message: God is calling you. Yes, you. He has been calling you all of your life. How do I, the most ordinary of people, know this with such certainty? Because if God is calling me—and I now realize he has been calling me my entire life—he is certainly calling you. Don’t believe me? Start by reading the Bible. It’s the story of God calling ordinary people. Then, make a real attempt to spend some time listening for God’s call. In this era of instant gratification and scheduling of our lives down to the minute, you are going to have to put God on your calendar for some quality time if you want to hear his call.
