There are two paths in life: one is demanding service and the other is serving. It doesn’t matter whether in your work or personal life. You are either the type of person that demands service or who wants to serve. It’s a good week to think about this—and really be honest with yourself!—as we contemplate how Jesus lived his life. So, which path are you on?
What do I mean by all of this? You are either the type of person who lords it over others, from a co-worker to family member, or the person who tries to empower others, with a simple smile or by making their lives better by how you live yours.
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28
It was abundantly clear how Jesus lived his life. He came to serve, and in the ultimate show of service to give his life for you and me, and everyone else who ever has or will live on this planet. His life was about empowering others. Jesus did not focus on his own needs, wants, and desires; his life was focused on us.
I think really effective leaders, whether at work or at home, look not to have others empower them but instead want to do everything to empower others. The most effective, successful businesses have a culture of empowerment, as do the most functional families. It’s all about leaders serving, not demanding service. That’s the true definition of leadership.
It’s never too late to start serving in every facet of your life, just like Jesus did. His lead is so very powerful, if we will just let him into our lives to serve and empower us.
Serve! And have a fulfilling day doing it!
