If You Don’t Listen for God You Will Never Hear Him!

If you don’t open your eyes and ears to God you will never find him, much less hear him. I know this sounds too “religious” and unreal to some. I was one of those “some” not many years ago. You hear what is blaring from your iPod or surround sound HDTV, but hearing God calling to you? That’s for those better fitted with a priest’s collar or a straightjacket.

Trust me for a bit. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What you have to gain by hearing God’s call and answering it is the start of a new life of happiness, peace, and fulfillment—not just in this lifetime, but also for eternity. You have to understand that this life is just the opening act to eternity.

But you, beloved, build yourselves up on you most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. Jude 1:20-21

We each have one life. It starts with a brief stint on earth and never ends in eternity. Most of us are so preoccupied with this world, and the things in it, that we don’t fathom eternity, much less simply think about it. We can’t see, touch, or hear it so it is not real.

God calls us to a new life on earth that leads to an eternity with him. However, most don’t answer because they don’t hear the call. They’re not even listening for it.

God is calling each one of us and waiting for us to answer and act. We just have to listen for the call. This is the 1st Secret to Life: LISTEN because God is calling you. It’s obviously a very well kept secret. If not, the world would be a far different place. We would be answering God’s call and living in love with God and each other. Loving and helping others would be more important than hating and fighting each other. We would clearly understand our purpose in life. We would be hearing God’s command to put away our swords.

“Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” Matthew 26:52

God loves us unconditionally. He wants us to love each other in the same way that he loves us. God calls us to put away the swords in our lives that stand in the way of love. These include our swords of envy, jealousy, hatred, ego, and pride, as well as our real weapons. God did not create us and this world to destroy it and each other. God did not give us a sword in Paradise. We have made enough of those on earth.

He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Isaiah 2:4

If God calls us to love others, we have to stop worrying about ourselves. Our focus needs to be on others, not on the world and ourselves.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

If our focus were on others, this world would be a kinder and gentler place. Curing illness would be more important than waging war. No one would go homeless or hungry.

We need to LISTEN for God’s call and answer it today. Our lives will dramatically change for the better, regardless of how good they are now. By answering God’s call we can take on any challenge in life, overcome any obstacle.

Take some time today to LISTEN!

  1. Amen! We are so blessed when we take the time to listen to God. We spend so much time listening to advice from others, tv, music, etc. Imagine what a difference it would make in our relationship with God if we took a fraction of that time and spent it listening to Him. It would no doubt transform our lives!
